Using a sociological lens, this course provides an introduction to the varied nature of rurality across the U.S. and how it shapes people and communities in both rural and urban places. In this course, students will be exposed to the rich diversity of rural society, social changes underway, and to current issues facing rural communities. This course also introduces students to basic social science research methods appropriate to understanding and working in communities. By tying together concepts of rurality, research methods and community strategies, the course will prepare students for future engagement with rural communities in a personal or professional capacity.
