This course offers a general survey of material culture in the Roman world from the beginnings of Rome in the Iron Age (9th century BCE) to the rise of Constantinople (4th century CE). Students will apply archaeological and historical evidence to reconstruct the long-term development of the culture, society, economy and religion of Rome and the Roman provinces, analyzing ancient processes of urbanization, state formation, imperial expansion and collapse and appraising their relevance to today’s world. Graded on A-F basis only. Recommended: AMS 1140 or AMS 1150; ARH_VS 1100; AMS 2200.
