This course explores material culture through the lens of ancient fabrication methods and the use of natural resources, focusing on how the availability of raw materials influenced local craft production in the Ancient Mediterranean world. Students will use the MU Museum of Art and Archaeology collections to reconstruct the origins of materials and technology through hands-on analysis of a wide range of relevant categories of finds, including gold jewelry, glass vessels, ivory furniture, and various types of ceramic objects. In class presentations and research projects, students will address questions of style and function, and evaluate the relationship between art and society. Graded on A-F basis only. Recommended: ARH_VS 1100 or equivalent; AMS 3210, AMS 3310, AMS 3410 and/or AMS 3510.
