This course is an introduction to the problems of understanding, analyzing, and writing about art and visual culture. Examining a wide range of twentieth-century visual culture, it asks: What is the nature of visual representation? How do we as observers, consumers, cultural critics, and historians interpret visual images? What issues are at stake in representation and interpretation? How does visual culture shape social norms and cultural values? Graded on A-F basis only.
