(same as PEA_ST 3022). This course investigates peacebuilding and peacemaking in modern Jamaica and the Caribbean. It explores peace initiatives within the historical and cultural context of the region, tracing its development from pre-colonial times to today. The course highlights the transition from indigenous populations to plantation economies to independent nations, examining the impact of race, class, and gender relations, as well as colonialism and imperialism, on peace prospects in Caribbean communities. It emphasizes the shared history and culture of the region while discussing the roles of race, ethnicity, class, and gender in the peacemaking process. As part of the course, students will participate in a week of experiential learning (Study Abroad) in Jamaica. Graded on A-F basis only. Recommended: PEA_ST 1050 or BL_STU 1000.
