(same as GERMAN 3605H). Investigates the history of Africans and African Americans in Europe, with a special focus on Germany, starting in the Ancient period of the Roman Empire and ending with the current events of today. Special focus on Africans in the Roman Empire, Medieval Africans in Europe, African American intellectuals in Germany around 1900, Germans of African descent under the Nazis, and African American GIs in occupied Germany after the Second World War. This course will challenge your ideas about “race” and racism, while linking US history to a larger global frame. Prerequisites: Honors eligibility required.
