Exploring the art, literature, music, and philosophy of the late 16th-19th centuries, the Reasonable Devils & Dark Visions segment of the Humanities Sequence will take us from the West Indian gallows and delirious hills of La Mancha in 17th century Spain to the second-floor bedroom of 208 Main Street in Amherst, Massachusetts during the Civil War. Along the way, we’ll ponder our existence in a bread oven in the Netherlands, bathe in a lake of fire in Hell, confront the horrors of slavery, hear live music from Vienna to the American South, brave Romantic madness in Russia, consider civil disobedience, and be peered at by New England mermaids. This is the third course in the long-running Honors Humanities Sequence. Prerequisites: Honors eligibility required.
