This course is an interdisciplinary survey of epidemic diseases from the ancient to modern eras. We will focus on the conditions that have given rise to epidemics and how different societies have understood and responded to them. We will trace the connections of epidemic diseases to increased globalization, examining links between epidemics and warfare, exploration, colonization, and trade networks. This course will conclude with a discussion of newly emerging diseases in the contemporary world. Prerequisites: Honors eligibility required.
