(cross-leveled with HIST 7580). This course will explore some of the ideas, institutions and events that shaped modern Western civilization and thought, focusing on Western Europe, but also giving attention to the relationship between the West and the rest of the world. The course will introduce topics such as the rise of, nationalism, the cult of science, scientific racism and sexism, consumer mass culture, fascist ideology, existentialism, psychoanalysis, the modern city, gender and sexuality. Prerequisites: junior standing.
