Fundamentals of Written Journalism and Strategic Communication is designed to be one of three courses to introduce students to the basics of journalism and strategic communication practice. In this course, students will learn and practice the basics of information gathering and writing across the disciplines of journalism and strategic communication. Good media writing requires more than an ability to craft clear sentences. It requires accuracy, curiosity, creativity and attention to detail. The class encompasses a variety of activities that will teach the following skills: AP style; News writing; Reporting; Interviewing; Story structure; Story boarding/scripting; Generating creative ideas; Research; Strategic thinking; Persuasive writing; Use of multiple platforms; Judgment; Attribution; Meeting deadlines. Graded on A-F basis only. Prerequisites: Sections of this course may be restricted to Undergraduate Journalism Majors during Early Registration.
