(cross-leveled with PHIL 7430). Conceptual, epistemological, and metaphysical issues that arise when considering current or historical theories in fundamental physics. Topics may include the conceptual foundations of spacetime, interpretations of quantum mechanics, underdetermination in large-scale cosmology, and relations between physical theories (e.g., reduction, emergence, correspondence, duality). Prerequisites: Sophomore standing. Instructor’s consent required to repeat course. Recommended: Two courses in philosophy (including PHIL 2700, or comfort with basic mathematical reasoning advised), or PHYSCS 3150.
