This course explores the Buddhist tradition in Tibet, from its introduction in the 8th century to the present. Topics include the merger of Indian Buddhism with the local Bon religion, the relationship between Tibetan Buddhism and Mahayana Buddhism, the Tibetan Buddhist canon, lamas and tulkus, religion and material culture in Tibet, and the influence of Tibetan Buddhism in Central Asia.
