Buddhism in East Asia

This course will trace the transmission of Buddhism from the Indian subcontinent to China, and from there to Korea and Japan. We will examine the historical development of East Asian forms of Buddhism, deal with key issues of Buddhist thought and practice, and look at the role of Buddhism in modern East Asian societies. Prerequisites: REL_ST 2110, REL_ST 2310 or REL_ST 3200, or instructor’s consent.
