Ecology and systematics of arthropods that affect the health of animals and people, including insect and tick vectors of pathogens causing tropical and temperate diseases such as African sleeping sickness, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, bartonellosis, Chagas’ disease, chikungunya, dengue, ehrlichiosis, filariasis and heartworm disease, leishmaniasis, Lyme disease, malaria, mosquito-borne encephalitis, plague, rickettsiosis, theileriosis, tick-borne encephalitis and yellow fever. Emphasis will be placed on arthropod identification and effects of arthropods and arthropod-borne pathogens on vertebrate hosts. Graded on A-F basis only. Prerequisites: BIO_SC 1030 or BIO_SC 1500 or consent of instructor. Recommended: MICRO 3345 or PLNT_SCI 3710.
